West Law
Emlyn is founded upon the premise that the eight virtues lead the knight as a beacon of morality. How we understand those virtues, their order, and their importance has changed many times over the century. Those of Westleeuw follow what they believe to be "West Law" or the "Law of Western Men".
Spirituality
- Mother, Maiden, Crone
- Past, Present & Future
- The Ankh or triskele
At the base of their understanding lies Spirituality represented by the Ankh of Devotion in present times and the Triskele in past times. The triskele represents the past, present and future as envisioned in a triple goddess; mother, maiden and crone. It is only by understanding our deep past, the Mother Earth, the cycle of life and death, and our place beside our ancestors are we able to lift ourselves and our fellow man up.
Sacrifice & Compassion
- Lords of Land and Sea
- Tears and Heart
West Law places it's second foundation within the balance between natural law and the human heart. Sacrifice and compassion are seen as the next two important concepts of maturity. The wild hunt is understood to be part of natural selection, a right and necessary transition from summer into fall. And the Lord of the Hunt, Cernonnouse is the keeper of the earth, the forest and the eternal summer lands.
West Law demonstrates its origins on the western coast of Cuiveinen as it sees the afterlife as Tir na Nog or Avalon, a land in the western sea ruled by Mannana Mac Lir, Lord of the Sea and Guardian of the Afterlife. Sacrifice and Compassion represent both our evolution as sentient creatures and our growth as children out of childhood. Our past as it transitions into our Now.
Honesty, Valor, Humility
- The Fate Speaker, the Berzerker .....
- Open Hand, The Sword, and Crook
If the goal of Justice and Honor is to be reached righteously, each must follow the paths of Honesty, Valor and Humility. For while service to the God of Law is the end goal, each must shed ego, fear and pride.
Looking for three gods/goddess that fit these virtues. Random Brain storming:
- Crook, Shepard, humble, simple, farmer (I also like Macha, wife of Cruinniuc as the goddess of Humility, see wikipedia)
- open hand, healing, generosity, plain speech, lay on hands, healing touch (that would make Badb the goddess of Honesty, and consequently prophesy)
- the sword, valor, courage, (what about Nemain for valor)
This would make this set of virtues ties directly to the Morrígna, a trio of three sisters. Its a good parallel but it might make the whole things to complicated.
Justice and Honor
- By my hand and will
- Chalice and Scales
To bind by oath defines the blended god Lugh-Tyr. In his role as Lord of the Circle, Lugh-Tyr is everything a knight or paladin idealizes. As Lugh he is warrior, king, craftsman and hero. As Tyr he was the first all-father before Odin, the friend-keeper of Fenrir and lost his hand to the great beast keeping the oath he made.
As the keeper of the Thing Tyr is the god of Law and Justice, while Lugh who is stern, swift to anger, eager for combat, a noble warrior, and a hero with a sweet tongue is the epitome of an Honorable Knight.
In some accounts Lugh-Tyr is viewed as a triple god, a father, son and avenging spirit in the form of a wolf or hound. The true origin of this view does not match the 8 virtues commonly worshipped in Emlyn, but there are parallels in other lore both pre and post dating this view.
Welsh Version
I could switch Lugh-Tyr to being Lludd-Tyr very easily since no one but I am really rping with it much. That would make since because Lludd also lost his hand and is associated with King Arthur. Wikipedia.
This would still keep Mannana Mac Lir as the sea god, as he's both Irish and Welsh, tho in Wales he'd be called Llyr.
